Michael Anderson (Denmark, 1859-1931) / About Michael Anderson
Michael Andersen founded Michael Andersen & Sons Pottery (MAS) in the 1880s on the Danish island of Bornholm, one of the centres of Danish pottery production in the 19th and 20th centuries. Having trained at the local Hjorøs pottery, he ran the pottery business with his four sons. One of his sons, Daniel (1885-1959), was a household name among potters, developing the iconic "Persian" glaze, which won a gold medal at the 1935 World's Fair in Brussels. The Persian glaze continued to feature in many designs well into the 1960s, and was exploited to its fullest by Marianne Starck.
Marianne Starck is from Germany and is one of the leading ceramists who contributed to the success of Michael Andersen & Sons pottery in the 20th century. She joined the factory as artistic director in 1955 and stayed until its closure in 1993, designing many iconic series. Today it has been partially revived by Solveig Ussing and operates out of a small workshop in Ronne, where some of the original MAS moulds are still in use.
