Finn Juhl (Denmark, 1912-1989) / About Finn Juhl When he was young, Finn Juhl aspired to be an art historian, but due to his father's opposition, he went on to study architecture at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, and began working at the architectural office of Vilhelm Lauritzen while still a student.
In 1937, at the age of 25, he exhibited at the Cabinet Makers' Guild Exhibition for the first time, and in the 1940s, in collaboration with cabinet maker Niels Vodder, he designed chairs that would become his signature works, such as the Easy Chair No. 45 and the Chieftain Chair. In 1942, he built his own house in Ordrupsgaard, north of Copenhagen, where he lived surrounded by furniture and everyday items that he had designed himself.
In the 1950s, he expanded his activities to the United States, where he gained international fame through projects such as the interior and furniture design for the Trusteeship Council Chamber at the United Nations Headquarters. He has also worked extensively as an architect and interior designer, designing the offices of Scandinavian Airlines, interiors for passenger aircraft, and exhibition venues for Danish design held around the world.
